I AM A TEACHER!

Three weeks after starting my teaching at the school, and I have fallen in love with it! A lot has come with moving abroad and I have dedicated so much of my energy to arranging this trip that I almost forgot why I came here! It’s unlike any job I have had before. I feel completely and utterly relaxed when standing in front of 40+ children, I am right in my comfort zone which makes me think that coming to China was 100% the right decision.

I have wanted to be a teacher for so long! It still feels so surreal to call myself a teacher and to be called a 老师 (this is the Chinese word for teacher) by the students at the school. Being a teacher is a lot of work but is made so rewarding when I teach a lesson that the students enjoy, it is especially fulfilling when the students tell me I am their favourite teacher too!

The experience of teaching here has been very different to what I thought it would be like. A lot of the students here have never seen a foreigner before, so they are fascinated with the way I look and talk. Whenever I walk to my classes, I am greeted by an overwhelming number of students shouting my name and asking how I am. At the school I teach, there are over 2,000 students but they all know my name and are super friendly all the time.

After being so unsure about what I wanted to do after graduating, I feel like I can finally breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that I picked the right area of work I want to go into. As I have said before, I am not the type of person that would enjoy an office job. The thought of sitting down, answering the phone all day, glued to a computer would bore me rigid. A recruitment position for example is not something that would excite me or make me want to come into work 5 days a week. With teaching, every day is different. Although I often teach different classes the same material, their interpretation of the activities and their own personal opinions and reactions vary all the time, making no two days alike.

I am very happy that I did not settle for a job that I would not enjoy. Teaching here also makes me realise that my three years at university did not go to waste, as my degree was the key to me getting this job.

Thank you for reading my post, and to all my friends who have recently got teaching positions, congratulations, we have the best job in the world!
