The 18th of February is approaching fast – this day marks TWO years panic-free! I have already done a post about reaching one-year panic-free (you can read it here), but I thought I would write an update!

Panic attacks are not fun, especially when you have them as regularly as I used to. They became extremely debilitating to the extent where I found it hard to eat, sleep, work or generally function. Luckily, I have managed to steer clear of them just shy of two years now, a massive achievement for me! I’ll make this post short as I don’t want to repeat what I have already said in a previous post.  

A lot has changed since two years ago, where panic attacks where a daily occurrence. I have embraced a different way of thinking when it comes to my mental health. I have tried different techniques, some successful, others not. It turned out that counselling and medications were not for me (but may indeed work for others), leading me to learn harder techniques, some that I still struggle with today. I have learnt that in order to strengthen my own mental health, I needed to cut toxic people out of my life, especially those who tried to bring me down. And most importantly, I have discovered that I am a lot stronger than I give myself credit for. 

Now, of course the 18th of this month is not here yet and I still have my arrival in China to cope with before I can celebrate two-years panic free. It may transpire that I have a panic attack in the days after I land. Even so, I am writing this in the hope that I will cope with this move well, and that any panic attacks will be short-lived due to my jet lag! 

As I have previously mentioned, I have learnt to embrace a more positive way of thinking. Negative thinking only encourages negative feelings. In the wrong words this can sound rather patronising and useless; people often say, “just cheer up,” or “don’t worry” which is really unhelpful advice! What I do instead is not to dwell on my negative thoughts and give them the fuel they need, I try and turn a negative into a positive, sometimes just by thinking how beneficial my anxious thoughts can be. Obviously, this does not work for everyone! 

I am planning on posting updates on my anxiety and potential panic attacks regularly. Hopefully there won’t be any serious episodes, but I will be transparent and honest with you all, as always, in the hope that it will help others reading this!

I totally agree about cutting negative people out of your life, it had a positive impact on me too. I have to be careful myself not to get too stressed out because they can pop up out of nowhere.
